

St. Paul’s Hospital, located in the centre of Causeway Bay, is one of the leading private hospitals in Hong Kong. Centered at the heart of the community St. Paul's Hospital is run by the Sisters of St. Paul de Chartres Order. The sisters started their medical mission in 1898 looking after the poor and underprivileged of Wan Chai and Happy Valley. Today the hospital is equipped with over 400 beds and 30 departments providing comprehensive medical care to the public. Over the centuries the hospital has been modernized, developed and expanded several times.
As a part of this modernization the newest hospital tower received an IMAGIC WEAVE® media facade by Haver & Boecker. This powerful and versatile LED system enables the content of the facade to be easily adjusted to suit the customer’s requirements. Amongst other things, the transparent media façade is used to show a promotional film about the various departments the hospital has to offer. Now, among the sea of lights of Causeway Bay, Hong Kong, the messages of St. Paul’s Hospital come into their own through the use of IMAGIC WEAVE®.
IMAGIC WEAVE®
IMAGIC WEAVE®, a combination of Haver & Boecker Architectural Wire Mesh and state-of-the-art LED technology of Traxon Technologies, an Osram Business, enables the creation of individually programmable lighting effects in up to 16 million colours including full video content on a new or existing façade. Suitable for outdoor applications,
IMAGIC WEAVE® operates at an extended temperature range of - 30°C to + 60°C and is fully UV and IP 67 rated. By attaching slim LED-profiles to the reverse side of the wire mesh the homogenous and transparent look of the façade is maintained at all times, even when the LEDs are not in use.
Requirements
For the media façade, the top section of two elevations of the tower have been partially covered with wire mesh. The IMAGIC WEAVE® media façade is located in front of the upper two floors on the northeast and the northwest facade of the hospital. The project posed some very special and technical requirements that had to be fulfilled. Firstly due to the 110 m height of the building, the transportation of all material to the roof was logistically very challenging for the workers on site. In addition to this the substructure and all materials had to be designed to withstand typhoon conditions. The design was also influenced by the local technical building regulations. Furthermore sufficient air ventilation to the engineering room located behind the media façade had to be guaranteed. By using DOGLA-TRIO 1030 in combination with the LED profiles, the required open area of 50% was achieved, fulfilling one of the many technical requirements of the project.
